Being Independent!

We are very lucky to get to try lots of different ways of learning in Room 10! One of the ways we learn to read is using the Reading Laboratory. This is a very cool system that uses lots of different stories with comprehension questions. We start out on one colour and move up as we get more questions right. It's also a great time for us to practice being self-motivated learners, which is great because one of our key competencies is Managing Self. We are working hard!

Showing Out Best Side!

This term is flying by fast and we are making sure we take time to enjoy each other and our time together. Today we took some pictures together as a class because we didn't have any from this term. We made sure the camera got our best side!

And then just for fun...

Check back for more great (and silly!) photos soon!

Field Trip

Kia ora everyone!

Please remember that this Thursday we will be going on a field trip. If you have not brought your permission slip back please do so today or tomorrow so we know what our numbers will be. If your parent/caregiver is able to help us as well we would be very appreciative!

Regards,
Miss Park

Athletics Day!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in Athletics Day! You are absolute superstars and I am so proud of you and the amazing efforts you put in! Thank you very much to all the parents, grandparents and other supporters who came down to cheer for us; your support is so important and we really appreciate it.

Well done to Teagan, Te Whetu and Jack who all got into counties for a range of events! I'm sure you will do just as well at counties and we are looking forward to hearing all about it.

Finally, great work Room 10 for winning the Year 3-4 class relays! You worked so hard and managed all those technical skills really well! Excellent effort!

Welcome to Term 4!

Welcome back Term 4! I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break! The year will be over before we know it!

Art
We will be exploring sculpture this term. We will be using a variety of materials, but clay will be our main medium. As we do not have a kiln we will not be able to keep very many of our creations but I will be sure to put some pictures on our blog so please check it regularly!

Duty
My duty day is Wednesday/Thursday. On Wednesday afternoons the class will be released at 2:50 p.m. They will be either left to play, colour or read in the classroom or sent onto the playground if it is fine enough. You are welcome to collect them at this earlier time but they are not permitted to leave school grounds without their parent or guardian until the bell goes at 3 p.m.

Important dates
Rapunzel Show: October 16th
Athletics Day: October 23rd
Postponement day for Athletics: October 24th
Labour Day: 27th October
Show Day: 14th November
End of Term: 17th December

Library
Due to Room 16 starting up in the Library we will not be making our usual Wednesday afternoon visits to look at books this term. We are looking at other options for this term and there will be books available in the class library but these must stay at school. If you would like information on how to join the Ashburton Library please pop in and I can point you in the right direction.

Performance
We are very lucky to have the Rapunzel visiting us this Thursday the 16th. The cost for this is $2.

Religious Education
We are fortunate to have Mrs Coulter come for half an hour each Thursday morning for Religious Education. If you do not wish for your child to participate in Religious Education please let me know. If your child has already opted out that will continue for this term. If you have any questions about this please feel free to ask.

Stationary
This is a great time to check your child’s stationary. Please make sure everything is named. Your child needs two sharp pencils, one rubber, one ruler, one glue stick and one pencil sharpener.

Topics for Term 3
Reading – Guided Reading and SRA
Writing – Narratives
P.E. – Run, Jump, Throw and Striking and Fielding
Music – Reading Music and Playing Un-tuned Instruments
Art – Sculpture
Maths – NUMP and Geometry
Topic –Drama
Te Reo Māori –Myths and Legends and Food

Toys and electronics
Please do not allow your child to bring any toys or electronic devices (e.g. tablets) to school. We cannot take responsibility for the safety of these devices, and toys often cause arguments and confusion in the playground. Children have access to laptops and tablets at school.

Uniform
The Hampstead School uniform is compulsory and need to be kept clean and tidy. Please make sure everything your child wears is named. It makes it much easier for things to find their way back their owner (particularly jerseys!) Please make sure the shoes your child wears to school are black with no other colours. If in doubt feel free to come in and check.

Sunhats
In Term 4 it is compulsory for children to wear a sunhat when out in the playground. Please send a sunhat with your child each day. They are welcome to keep one in their desk.

Homework
There will be no Homework for Term 4.

As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

Kind regards,
Stacey Park

Being Friends in Room 10

As the year goes on it's easy to start to feel a little bit sick of each other. Today in Room 10 we decided to take a few minutes to appreciate all the great things about our awesome class mates.

We started by creating a beautiful card with our names on the front cover. We made them bright and eye catching! Then we all lined the desks and thought hard about the things we like about our classmates. We tried very hard to be descriptive because descriptive praise is so fun to hear.

We didn't have any trouble thinking of nice things to say. As the Kid President tell us "If you can't think of anything nice to say you aren't thinking very hard."

We had a great time! Te Whetu told Miss Park that it was "just like getting presents!"

Check back again soon!

A Wild Day...

Here's a piece of shared writing Room 10 about pyjama day...it was pretty wild!

Yippee time to get dressed for school in my pyjamas! On the way to school I saw lots of bright beautiful pjs. When I got to school just about everyone was wearing their jimjams! Miss Park was a fox! Miss Ovens was a scary dinosaur. Miss Cameron was dressed like a cow. Moooooo. There were lots of animals all chasing each other. Some people were dressed in the same pyjamas as each other like Rose and Amelia! Kyle and Ryan were too. Twins! Lots of people were wearing onesies.

When the teachers were in their onesies we couldn’t even tell who they were. When Miss Park stood up she couldn’t see her tail! Mr Melrose had his pyjama pants on. They were light and dark blue checkered with light and dark grey. He took a photo of Rose and Amelia.

Oh my gosh! Was that a dinosaur?! Look at its face! Its ok it’s just Miss Ovens. Phew! Wait is she a dinosaur? Maybe she’s a crocodile? We will call her a crocosaur! Shouldn’t she be extinct by now? Especially with that sickly, slimy green colour from the swamp. Look at all those pointy, sharp teeth. They look like miniature saws. Yikes how many teeth has she got?! Wait, where’s her class? I hope she hasn’t eaten them! I hope she doesn’t eat us! Quick hide before she eats us! Is she chasing us? Run away!  Hang on, she’s wearing shoes. That’s not that scary.

Rose was a super cool ninja! Look out she might karate chop us! I hope she doesn’t have any swords. Woah, she just karate chopped the whole playground in half! Her hand must be REALLY sore now! Is it me or does that concrete look split in half to you? She just kicked a tree over! I wonder who she was trained by. Just joking, she hasn’t destroyed the school…yet. But she might be a ninja turtle.

There’s a wild fox in our class…a wild fox that can’t find its tail! She’s got orange fur like the boiling hot sun and a white belly. Speaking of her belly I think I can hear it rumbling! She must be hungry too!  I’m too young to die! Oh no, now she’s prowling around the playground. She might be scouring it for her next dinner. Look, that kid is running for her life! Oh no, she’s turned around and coming for me! Maybe it’s not a fox, maybe she’s an orange werewolf! Or maybe she’s a big giant cat. Either way, you should never trust a fox on pyjama day.

It looks like the ninja, the crocosaur and the fox are working together! Lucky it’s home time; I was so scared of getting eaten! Most terrifying school day ever!!!

Thanks for stopping by, come back again soon!

PJs in School?!

You read that right! We got to support a great cause AND have lots of fun doing it! We wore our PJs to school and donated a gold coin each to KidsCan, which is a great charity for young people living with cancer. Luckily it was a beautiful day to wear your PJs! Check it out...

Technology with Gap Filler

This term we have been learning about the Gap Filler organisation in Christchurch and how they fill in the gaps left behind by the earthquakes. We had a go at designing our own site to fill a gap at school. We were also lucky enough to be visited by one of the people who work at Gap Filler! Sally visited us to have a look at our site proposals and show us some more interesting information about Gap Filler. She even dressed up like a golfer and lent us a golf club, golf ball, astroturf and road cone to have a go at Gap Golf!
